Description

Orijin Bitters (20 cl PET & 75 cl Glass, 30 % ABV)

Product story
Launched in 2013 by Guinness Nigeria (a Diageo subsidiary), Orijin changed the face of the Nigerian bar almost overnight. The original 6 % RTD beer opened the door, but Orijin Bitters, a 30 % ABV liqueur, cemented the movement toward African-flavoured spirits. Bottled in 20 cl PET “pocket-rocket” and 75 cl glass sharing formats, the liquid infuses neutral spirit with kola nut, bitter orange peel, oakwood, wormwood and dried prune before balancing with cane sugar.

In the glass it gleams mahogany. Aroma starts bittersweet, think marmalade on rye toast, while a sip flashes prune-raisin sweetness, then plunges into resinous wormwood bite. At 30 % ABV it’s heftier than vermouth yet lower than rum, making it a cocktail workhorse: swap Campari for Orijin Bitters in a Naija Negroni, or whip up an “Orijito” by muddling mint, lime, 50 ml Orijin Bitters and topping with soda.

Cultural clout: Within two years of launch, Nielsen data showed Orijin RTD products owned over 50 % of Nigeria’s non-beer bottled-alcohol category; Bitters rode that wave and today anchors a ₦100 billion herbal-spirits segment. Guinness Nigeria employs 3 000+ staff and sources botanicals from Edo and Osun states, supporting smallholder herb farmers.

Health debate? Fans swear it “prevents hangovers” thanks to herbal extracts. While wormwood and kola nut have documented digestive properties, no peer-reviewed study confirms hangover protection; Diageo markets only taste and cultural resonance.

Orijin Bitters keeps indefinitely unopened; opened, flavours stay sharp 24 months if stored cool and capped tight.
